After giving it some thought, here is beta version 1.0

http://s000.tinyupload.com/ind...1082429034

I think it is bug free, there are numerous aspects that are not finished and are likely to be changed in the near future, these include sound effects and their priority and alien movement, the movement is ok but I am not happy with it.

I have only tested this in Vice and would appreciate any feedback from its performance on real hardware.

NTSC is not supported at the moment, sorry about that.

Highscore table and entry should be fully working except for the rank, which will always show as 99 in the hiscore table.

The difficulty is not the starting difficulty and would represent around 40-50% through the game, it will gradually increase as you progress in the finished version.

Hope to get some feedback from this beta!

There have been a lot of posts in this thread recently, thank you all for using your knowledge and experience to show the truth of the situation.

I understand that these are the facts.

1) CSDb does not support game developers in any way. They do not respect the wishes of developers. This includes linking to the original, crediting the developers or highlighting Beta status and encouraging feedback through the designated channel (this thread in my case).

2) The surrounding community: various websites, youtubers etc. are equally toxic and have the same disregard for developers. Not all of them, but the majority, especially the more popular ones.

3) Something not touched on, but affected me. The constant barrage of comments in this thread telling me that CSDb does not affect developers and they support developers, what is MY problem. Etc. etc.. I really tried to get away from this, my views did have some support. But this did not stop the 'Scene' supporters, they just kept on, over and over and over to the point where I couldn't even talk about the game anymore. Every few posts it would be back to badly informed people banging on about the scene.

Add all this up and it makes spending time developing for the C64 pointless in my opinion. All I would be doing is providing fuel for others, supporting the cracking groups and their world. I don't want to do that. C64 seems unique in this regard, I don't know of other platforms that are plagued by this problem. Sure cracking groups exist on other 'retired' platforms, but not to this degree.

The scene and cracked versions could co-exist with the legitimate versions, respectful reporting and forum moderation would encourage this. Do not promote cracked versions of new games, do not make videos of cracked versions of new games, do not link to cracked versions of new games, appreciate developers for the hundreds of hours they have put into projects. If this was the case, maybe the community would see more ambitious projects being developed.

It seems the CSDb has become a legitimate source for 'Joe Public' and is the 'go-to' website for all your C64 software needs and as Lasse pointed out, this breaks the link between the product and the developer.

This smacks of this kind of attitude: 'You have done your part, we will take the credit and handle everything from now on' Hahahha, no thanks.

Version 1.20 changes:

New and much improved SID music by Saul Cross.

Atmospheric background sound track by Saul (thunder, wind, animal sounds etc). If you don’t like atmospheric sounds you can switch them off on the “extras” page. You can also mute all the music/sound for a slight in game speed increase.

Frame Sync and updated Frame Skipping taken from Atari final release version for Turbo Chameleon 64 compatibility. (Run on Turbo Chameleon 64 at 3mhz or greater to play game frame synced at 50/60hz with no slowdown!)

Much cleaner and slightly faster full update screen routine.

A number of small improvements to some of the other C64 specific routines.

Additional .CRT version included for cartridge user fans (thanks to SAM’s script).

Pentagram 1.30 για C64 & Plus4 και νέα C128 VDC version.

Code .... Emu
Music .... Saul Cross of RGCD
Graphics .... STE'86

I’ve made some improvements to the CBM code of Pentagram and also made native C128 Vic-II and VDC versions. (Both 16k & 64k VDC supported).

The C64 and Plus4 versions now run slightly faster. Both versions are getting very close to the speed of the Spectrum version.

The native C128 Vic-II version is now slightly faster than the Spectrum version and the C128 VDC version is the fastest of them all by some distance!

Changes include:

5% Speed increase and less memory used by improving all the main CBM routines. (The Sprite Blit to Screen routine is 30% faster.)

Excellent new title screen by STE.

SuperCpu compatibility for all versions. Many thanks to Redrumloa for the SuperCpu testing.

Option on Extras page to fix frame rate at 3 different speeds for accelerator users. (So you can slow the game down a bit to make it easier to play with SuperCpu & TC64.)

Moved fire onto Space Bar and pickup onto M key in keyboard mode. (Pickup is still on the Space Bar in joystick mode.)

Special Novaload C64 tape version, made to look similar to the original C64 Ultimate tape games.

Thunder/Wind sfx removed (sorry!) to keep the music and sfx player separate to save some cpu time.

Please note that if you play the C128 VDC version with WinVice then please turn off “Video cache” in the Video settings/VDC render box, as you might get video corruption if you don’t.

I have added some elements to simulate a Mario style game with pixel precise scroll. I think it can be done at 50 fps (test attached, use cursor to move).

In this test some things are missing, like sound and scoreboard, but I think there's time for that, and it is possible to save speed by optimizing things like compiling tiles. Alternatively, it is also possible to save CPU by using byte precision instead of pixel precision for the scroll (it could use the stack to draw sprites and tiles then, and save memory from sprites).

After all the buffers and screen areas, there are about 24kb free in the first 64kb of ram, so simple games for 64kb are also feasible with this "engine".
I would also like to do an extended version of the engine for 128kb with multidirectional scroll, so that it can cover more game types. It can also work at 25 or 17 fps, etc... to use more and biggest sprites at once on screen. I remember great Amiga games that do not run at 50fps, Gods for example, that could have a similar performance on CPC.
since Mario's theme has only been used for evaluation purposes of an engine demo. As commented in an earlier message, as far as I know, the first game that will use this engine is not planned to be a Mario conversion.

But, once the engine be published, any developer can use it to do Super Mario Bros or anything else. By the way, I think GinBlog82 is going ahead with its project of doing SMB on CPC, and I do not want to shadow his project.

Ας δούμε τι λέει ο ίδιος ο Juan J.(Reidrac) Martínez
   http://www.commodorespain.es/entrevista ... -para-c64/ (auto translated)
"Rescuing Orc" was your first project to create a game in C64. Have you ever done anything else in this system or just decided to try it? How was the experience?

I did not know the system, although I implemented a virtual machine for the CPU (MOS 6502) a few years ago. Programming a virtual machine does not have much to do with programming for that CPU, apart from all the C64 features.

I had been following RGCD for a few years (although I never got to submit to their contest), and I've met some very nice people on Twitter who are C64 fans and still using it and programming today.

I was lucky that Vanja Utne offered to make me a loading screen for "Magica", one of my games for Amstrad CPC.

A bit because of comparing systems, and because the community I know seems very healthy, I started to investigate to "make a small game" ... and I let myself take a little.

I quote from your personal blog: "Programming for the Commodore 64 is not too complicated, the existing documentation is top notch and basically having a memory map and a couple of explanations about graphical modes and hardware sprites, it's easy to get up and running "Is it really easy to program for a C64? Especially seeing that it is made with assembler.

Compared to the Spectrum and CPC, which are the other two platforms I have programmed, I find it very affordable. All in my humble opinion, of course.

I usually program the games in C, adding assembler when it needs to be optimized. My experience with 6502 is that the C language does not translate very well to the instruction set of that CPU, so I started writing the whole game in assembler.

The truth is that I have been able to recycle many ideas I bring from other systems, and hardware sprites are generally easy to use. In one week I had the equivalent of a month's work in the CPC, approximately.

It is true that the 6502 has its limitations, especially when you come from the Z80 there are things that cost a little to do them, but in return you have a set of instructions simple and easy to learn.
